We rolled into Fiona’s complex just before dusk. She’d hardly said a word the rest of the drive, but pretended to sleep while her thoughts flared. I tasted sour memories on my tongue like lemon juice, while the shadows hovered over her, dimming her colors and stealing her happiness.

“Thanks for the bear,” Fiona said as I walked her to her door. “Hailey will love it, I’m sure.”

“I’m glad.”

Fiona didn’t want to be alone. The last thing she wanted was to be alone, but she wasn’t ready to tell me about him either. She was cloudy with the incident at the fair and it tied her more tightly to her past.

“Hey,” I said. “We never had that second motorcycle ride.”

The barest flicker of a smile touched her lips. “That’s true…”

“Come on. Pack a bag.”

“Pack a… Where are we going?”

“I don’t know. We’ll figure it out when we get there.”

“Just…get on your motorcycle and drive somewhere?”

Christ, she was beautiful. Find the sunshine, Fiona. That’s all I want for you.

“Grab everything you need for the night,” I said. “I’ll be back in twenty minutes.”

Her laughter was silver coins sliding together. Her colors brightened and shimmered; the pink came back. “Um, okay. I’ll see you soon.”

I kissed her lips softly. “See you soon.”
